Decision soon on Oswestry store bid

Saturday 31st July 2010, 11:29AM BST.

Councillors are likely to meet in September to make a decision on Oswestry’s three remaining supermarket applications, council bosses said today.

Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee threw out a bid to build the multi-million store on Oswestry’s Central Car Park at a packed meeting on Thursday.

Committee members also deferred consideration of three other rival store bids.

Shropshire Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt said the committee was expected to meet again in two months’ time.

But he said that date could change if J Ross Developments, the applicants behind the Central Car Park plans, appealed against yesterday’s decision.

Bosses at J Ross Developments have so far refused to comment on whether they will appeal.

The decision flies in the face of council planners’ advice which recommended the Central Car Park plan was the best for the town and would have less of an impact on the town centre traders than the three other rival bids.

The decision last week to decline the Central Car Park option has to be seen as a victory for simple common sense. I don’t know what planning dictates were followed in recommending it but anyone with even a passing knowledge of Oswestry would know that most people travel to Oswestry in cars (if they didn’t why would the developers have suggested a 500 space + car park!) and that the road system is simply not suited to getting any serious volume of traffic into and out of the very centre of town.
For me the question is what happens now? I’ve been over to Ellesmere a number of times recently and the example there of a supermarket effectively on the edge of town with it’s own car park looks to have been hugely successful in livening the town up. Personally I’d love to see a cinema back in Oswestry but at the expense of another supermarket I’m not sure.
