Oswestry market ‘cheaper than superstores’
Thursday 29th July 2010, 7:30AM BST.
Shoppers visiting Oswestry’s market are getting better value for their fruit and vegetables than at supermarkets, a survey has found.
An Oswestry action group says fresh fruit and vegetables are cheaper in the town’s market than well-known chain stores.
Members of OS21, a group set up to promote and support independent traders, said its results came after a year-long survey which they say is good news for the town’s indoor market.
Volunteers have been collecting data from independent shops and supermarkets in the town on a Wednesday every month.
And results of the shopping survey suggests fresh fruit and vegetables are cheaper in the Powis Hall Market and independent shops than in the town’s supermarkets.
Eggs are also cheaper at the market and cheddar cheese was thought to be around the same price.
Other results showed that meat is more expensive in independent butchers and fish is higher at the market than supermarkets.
But members said this was because meat is locally sourced.
OS21 spokesman Saffron Rainey said: “I think it is an interesting survey.
“It is a good view of Oswestry. If you are shopping for value what the survey says is to get the best price you have to shop around.”
Mr Rainey said after looking at the results they would like to continue the project to see if the figures will change.
“We would like to have half or quarterly reports to see what the findings are over the next year or two.”
Mr Rainey said he hoped the results would help to promote independent traders in Oswestry. He said: “I would hope this will promote the market.”
