New MP makes maiden speech
Thursday 29th July 2010, 10:17AM BST.
Montgomeryshire’s new MP has taken to the floor of the House of Commons to deliver his maiden speech just weeks after being released from hospital for heart problems.
The Conservative MP, Glyn Davies from Berriew, near Welshpool, paid trbute to Montgomeryshire’s former MP Lembit Opikin in his first speech from the green benches earlier this week.
Mr Davies’ opening speech came weeks later than expected after he spent three days in hospital.
The MP who ousted Lib Dem Lembit Opik in the May general election, was left feeling extremely upset after missing the Budget and Prime Minister’s Questions for his maiden speech last month.
But he was back on form this week and also took part in a debate on the role of backbench MPs and protecting the power and authority associated with the House of Commons throughout history.
Mr Davies said: “My immediate predecessor was Lembit Öpik, and I want to pay tribute to him. He was a man of great talent in many, many areas of activity.
“I must admit that in some areas of activity he achieved a level of expertise that I am sure I will never be able to match.
He served his constituents very well, and I wish him well in his new chosen careers.”
He pointed out that he was not the first Davies to represent Montgomeryshire. Two previous MPs were Lord Davies of Llandinam and Clement Davies, a celebrated leader of the Liberal Party.
