Police swoop on Shrewsbury house
Wednesday 28th July 2010, 12:01PM BST.
A POLICE CRIME unit swooped on a Shrewsbury house to carry out a search of the property as part of a major investigation.
Officers raided the home in St George’s Street, Frankwell, yesterday. They were at the property for several hours but today refused to comment on the nature of the operation or whether any arrests had been made.
Residents described seeing officers, including some with sniffer dogs, carrying out the search but said they had no idea why it was being done.
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said it was an investigation being led by the North West Regional Crime Unit, which includes officers from a number of forces, including Merseyside and Lancashire.
“A spokesman for the unit said: “Officers from the unit have carried out a search warrant at an address in the Frankwell area of Shrewsbury as part of a wider investigation being conducted outside Shropshire.
Impact
“The search, which began on Monday, was concluded yesterday. It relates to a criminal investigation based in the north west and is unlikely to impact further on the Shropshire area. It’s an ongoing inquiry and no further details are being released for operational reasons.”
Residents said they saw officers search the outside of the house and the stairs on the carpet could be seen ripped up from the outside of the three-storey house.
Tara Keddie, of St George’s Street, said: “I have no idea what the incident could be about and we don’t know what is going on.”
Another neighbour, Sadie Lewis, said: “I have lived here for 14 years and I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
A spokesman from Lancashire Police today said the investigation was carried out by the regional unit.
