Oswestry signs to get £10,000 upgrade
Wednesday 28th July 2010, 11:59PM BST.
Tourists struggling to find their way around Oswestry could see fading and outdated signs given a £10,000 upgrade.
County and town officials were getting together today to find out how best to spend the cash on improving signs.
Shropshire Councillor Martin Bennett says it is important the signs are created soon.
“We have £10,000 for signage in the town and we want to progress that work,” he said. “The town council and Shropshire Council are coming together at a meeting.
“We want to know what we can do immediately with the situation.”
He says officers have walked around and identified three different areas that need to be looked at.
The first is to improve tourist signs as the current ones are worn.
Some will also need to be changed as they point to landmarks which no longer exist – for example one points to the borough council.
Tourist signs are currently blue in colour but Mr Bennett says they are thinking of changing them to black and gold. It is believed these colours make signs easier to read.
The second issue is to improve directions to car parks and the third to improve road signs directing motorists.
With such a large range of issues it is possible the group may need to find more money for the project.
Mr Bennett said: “We want to decide how many new finger signs we want and how much it is going to cost.
“We want to get on with it. Obviously it is public money and we want most value for money.”
