Mother’s plea for answers over son’s blaze death
Monday 26th July 2010, 2:15PM BST.
THE MOTHER of a Shropshire teenager who died in a mystery shed fire nearly 20 years ago today made an emotional appeal for help to find the answers to her son’s death.
Faith Wright, speaking for the first time in 17 years about her son Liam’s death, said she hoped somebody’s conscience would lead them to come forward.
The 19-year-old from Brookside, Telford, was found in a burned out shed next to the ski slope at Madeley Court Centre, Telford, on September 10, 1990.
An inquest recorded an open verdict and the circumstances of his death have always remained a mystery to his family.
Speaking from her home in Spain, Mrs Wright revealed her shock at being told police had arrested a man last week on suspicion of murder after the case was reopened by detectives. The man has since been released on bail.
Shocked
Mrs Wright said she had always hoped she would find out what had happened to her beloved son.
“I was very shocked when I first heard that the police were re-investigating the death of my son Liam but obviously welcomed it.
“I have always lived in hope that someday maybe someone’s conscience would lead to a satisfactory conclusion to this case,” she said.
Mrs Wright said the re-opening of the case had been extremely difficult as she no longer had the support of her husband, Eddie, who died in 2003, without ever knowing what had happened to his son.
Mrs Wright said: “I know the police are doing everything that they can to find out what happened to Liam and I am extremely grateful for that.
“I have had to live with this nightmare for nearly 20 years, the pain never goes away, for a mother to lose a child in these circumstances is devastating.
She added: “To just know what happened to Liam would give me some inner peace.
“Therefore I reiterate what the police are saying and would appeal for anyone with any new information to please contact West Mercia Police or Crimestoppers.”
Anybody with any information should contact Telford police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
