Oswestry meeting will discuss Shropshire court closure plans
Sunday 25th July 2010, 1:00PM BST.
A meeting is being arranged in Oswestry to allow residents to ask questions over plans to close courts in Shropshire.
The Government wants to close magistrates’ courts in Market Drayton, Oswestry and Ludlow along with Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Ludlow county courts.
Members of Oswestry Town Council have raised concerns about the plans.
Town clerk David Preston told councillors at their amenities committee meeting: “The mayor has written to the team leader for information about the centralisation plans. We have invited them to come to speak to the town council about the intended loss for Oswestry. The consultation ends in mid September.”
Councillor Heather Bickerton said she was not surprised about the court closure plans.
She said: “It was mooted at least two years ago that the magistrates’ court would be closing”.
Councillor Martin Bennett said it was important that the meeting would also allow input from the public.
He said: “This is one of those issues which we really need to engage with the wider community.”
Plans to axe the courts would cost 16 jobs but save the Government more than £430,000.
