Oswestry site ‘not available’ for supermarket and cinema
Saturday 24th July 2010, 9:52AM BST.
Oswestry Town Council has reiterated its view that the Central Car Park is not available for developing as a supermarket and cinema.
The council which owns almost all of the site, is to write to Shropshire Council before its crunch meeting on Thursday over which planning application for a supermarket for Oswestry gets the go-ahead.
It says correspondence between the developers J Ross Developments and the council had not been helpful.
A report by planners is recommending the council to be minded to grant planning permission for the development on Central Car Park. But the council says the land it not available.
Mr David Brammer, a legal associate with solicitors DLA Piper UK LLP, said on behalf of his client, Oswestry Town Council, that the town council had been very clear about its position throughout the planning process and over the negotiations that preceded that process.
It supported a rival bid to build the supermarket on Oswestry’s Smithfield livestock site and opposed the Central Car Park application, he said.
In response, Nick Scott from J Ross Developments said the firm had received “clear advice that the site is available within a reasonable period of time”.
