Shropshire boy, 16, loses appeal over stabbing sentence

A 16-year-old boy detained for eight months after stabbing a man during a birthday party in south Shropshire has lost an appeal to have the sentence overturned.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to an eight-month detention and training order after unlawfully wounding the man at a party on March 12, this year.

Magistrates in Telford on July 14 also sentenced him to four months to run concurrently on two charges of battery and possession of a bladed article.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday, Judge Robert David Trevor-Jones told the teenager the wounding offence was so serious he would not change the original sentence but that there would be no separate penalty for the assault charges.

Mr Robert Edwards, prosecuting, said the victim had been stabbed below his ribcage and in his leg and had surgery to remove his spleen.

Mr Mark Sharman, for the teenager, said he had drunk eight pints of lager and some vodka.

The teenager said the knife had been in his pocket as he had been rabbiting, said Mr Sharman. The boy had no intention of using it to hurt anyone, he added.
