Pupils raise £5,000 in memory of Xander Shaw
Friday 23rd July 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Children at a Shropshire school have come together to raise £5,000 in memory of a pupil who died after falling into a slurry pit on a farm in the county.
Pupils from Broseley Church of England School spent a year raising the cash for the Midlands Air Ambulance after the death of fellow pupil Xander Shaw, seven, who died in July last year.
In memory of Xander, who was described by headteacher Jonathan Pygott as a lively, confident and extremely bright boy, four pupils presented a cheque for £5,000 to the Midlands Air Ambulance at Cosford.
Pupils Jo Evans, Claudia Gunter, Fletcher Law and Antonia Shaw made the special visit to the air base where they met two paramedics who accepted the cheque.
Mr Pygott, who said the school had been left devastated by Xander’s death, praised all of the pupils for their efforts in raising so much money. He said: “For a school with less than 200 pupils, this represents a fantastic effort and is just one of the very positive ways in which we have remembered Xander this year.
“We had pupils taking part in a marathon where each person would walk at least half a mile. In total the pupils walked 896 miles and raised a lot of money.”
Also in memory of the seven-year-old, schoolchildren lit lanterns on his birthday last year and have named a design and science award after him, which is presented to a top pupil each year.
Xander had been playing in farm grounds near Broseley when he went missing on July 24 last year.
The schoolboy’s body was found in a slurry pit after a frantic 30-minute search for him.
