Motor racing legend Nigel Mansell will be swapping four wheels for two when he whizzes through Shropshire on a non-stop charity bike ride.

The 1992 Formula One world champion will be attempting to cover 1,200 miles in 13 days to raise bumper funds for charity UK Youth, which supports young people nationwide.

Mansell’s gruelling round-Britain odyssey kicked off today in London. The 56-year-old, who managed 31 race wins in a career spanning 15 years, is expected to reach Shropshire on Sunday lunchtime with his route taking him from Bridgnorth to Telford to Whitchurch and on to Chester. The riders are expected to pass through Whitchurch at about 12.45pm.

His sons Leo and Greg are to join him as he bids to raise the profile of the charity’s work.

He said: “This is UK Youth’s centenary year and I want to do something really challenging to mark it.”

Money raised will support projects touching the lives of 750,000 young people around Britain.
