Powys County Council told to make cutbacks before axing services

Serious cutbacks need to be made to Powys County Council’s staff pension scheme and councillor’s expenses before bosses axe any more frontline services, civic leaders have warned.
Welshpool Town Council has now called on the authority to look at what it is spending internally before making cuts elsewhere.
Councillor Tony Harvey said: “Powys County Council needs to start looking not only at staff cuts, but also what is being spent on staff pension schemes, subsidised meals and councillors’ overall expenses before it starts making cutbacks to vital public services.”
Town clerk Robert Robinson said he believed too much money was being spent on the county council’s pension scheme.
He said: “We all know that there are severe cuts coming and the county council has already held a public consultation asking people to give their opinions.
“We know that it plans to cut staffing levels but it also surely need to start looking at the pension scheme because it amounts to a third of its total salary expenditure.”
Mr Robinson feared cuts could affect public toilets, libraries, youth centres and leisure centres.
