Man arrested over 1990 death is granted bail

A man arrested on suspicion of the murder of a Telford teenager who died in a fire nearly 20 years ago has been released on bail, police said today.

The body of Liam Wright was found in the debris of a shed which had been destroyed by fire next to Madeley ski slope in the early hours of Sunday, September 10, 1990.

A man, in his late 30s, was arrested yesterday morning after the case was re-opened by West Mercia Police officers.

He was quizzed until late last night, when detectives released him on bail pending further inquiries.

Steve Ash, who employed Mr Wright as an electrical engineer at Lockwell Electrics on Stafford Park at the time of his death, said today: “Liam was a smashing lad. I had employed him four or five months before his death.

“He mixed in really well with everyone and he was doing great here.

“He picked up things really quickly and was very bright. He had got his whole future ahead of him.”

Mr Ash said the 19-year-old from Brookside failed to turn up for work on the Monday morning.

“It was me who raised the alarm because Liam didn’t turn in for work and then I heard a description on the radio of his personnel effects, including his ring with his initials of LW on, which I recognised and had to identify,” said Mr Ash.

“It was a real shock and such a shame.”
