Plan to create residential home to help abused children

A new residential home for children could be opened in the heart of the south Shropshire hills, with proposals for a new therapeutic school.

A maximum of nine youngsters would be cared for at the proposed school after applicants submitted plans to convert Willowfield Guest House, in All Stretton.

The development highlights plans for children aged between 11 and 16-years-old.

It reads: “The children will have suffered abuse on many levels. All will have come from problem backgrounds.

“The aim of the applicants as a care company is to ensure they have a stable life enabling them to secure a better future.”

According to the plan, the youngsters would be cared for by experienced childcare staff on a ratio of one member of staff to two children.

This ratio would be maintained throughout the day. The staff would be present on a rota basis from 8am until 11pm each day.

The children would be constantly supervised on the premises and on trips out from the school. During the night there would be two members of staff on duty.

They would also be educated during their stay at the home.

The children are expected to come from anywhere in the country and will return to their home town when they leave.

Applicants, Christine Smith and Karen Bayliss have formed an independent privately-owned company. The planning statement refers to them as being experienced in childcare. Karen Bayliss said: “We are looking forward to working with the local community.”

The application is under consultation and Shropshire Council planners look set to make a decision in August.
