Telford & Wrekin Council facing £4m funding cuts
Monday 19th July 2010, 2:26PM BST.
Telford & Wrekin Council faces funding cuts of £4 million this year, civic leaders revealed this afternoon. It has lost £3 million in revenue grants for day-to-day spending on its services.
And a further £1 million in capital grants will go which cover building projects.
Details of where savings will have to be made, and the services affected, will emerge on August 10 in reports to cabinet.
The council had originally been looking at grant losses of about £2.2 million but the figure has steadily risen each day with new Government announcements on plans to curb public sector spending.
Council leader, Andrew Eade, said the council had been “proactive” and several months ago had begun to find budget savings as it had expected a funding squeeze.
He said today: “We are one of the few councils to have taken a proactive approach and are ahead of the game.
“We anticipated what was coming and we have been doing a lot of preparatory work.
“We are facing a very challenging time ahead and difficult decisions are going to have to be made but we will be working hand in glove with the community.”
What the council doesn’t know yet is what impact budget cuts at other public agencies will have on its own finances. But the council will be helped by having a bit more flexibility on how it develops its budget.
Shropshire Council is losing funding of £10 million this year, and its cabinet will be considering on Wednesday how it deals with this financial loss.

If only there was a way of surcharging the members of the last government! But there isn’t.

Lets face it – previous levels of funding were all based on the easy availability of money that wasn’t real. Lots was borrowed and lots was conjured up out of thin air thanks to a runaway banking system that ultimately imploded, thanks to a combination of greed, poor regulation and its own inherent fragility.
This is like pressing the reset button. It’s an opportunity to get back to a level of spending that’s sustainable and realistic. It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be painful for some, many people won’t like what’s coming, but it’s impossible to keep on spending imaginary cash.
