40 firefighters tackle barn fire near Ludlow

More than 40 firefighters from across three counties worked together in order to tackle a huge blaze involving 400 bales of hay and straw at a farm on the south Shropshire border.

The fire was in an eight bay dutch barn at Brakes Farm at Downton on the Rock, near Ludlow, where 300 bales of hay and 100 of straw had caught alight, the fire service said today.

The fire started after 5pm on Saturday and a crew remained on watch at the scene on Saturday night.

Hereford and Worcester Fire Service said they had no indication at this stage how the fire had started.

Rob Ball, from Hereford & Worcester Fire, said: “Our firefighters were at the scene very quickly, and were ably supported by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service. As well as sending along an extra appliance, they also provided specialist pumping equipment.”

He confirmed no animals were in the barn and no one was injured in the fire.

Crews from Knighton, Ludlow, Craven Arms and Hereford & Worcester Fire attended, along with the incident commander from Shrewsbury and a pumping unit from Craven Arms.

Yesterday a second pump and a water carrier attended to begin raking over and damping down.

Firefighters from from Kingsland, Leominster, Kington, Leintwardine and Bewdley also took part in the operation.
