Mary celebrates her centenary
Saturday 17th July 2010, 11:30AM BST.
A Shropshire nursing home’s oldest resident has celebrated her 100th birthday topped off with a telegram from the Queen marking the milestone.
Phyllis Mary Yaxley, known as Mary, was thrown a special party by staff and residents at Radbrook Nursing Home in Stanhill Road, Shrewsbury, last month.
Mrs Smart was born on June 20, 1910, in Castlefields, Shrewsbury. She lived in the town all her life working as a book keeper for her family at Smart Furniture before marrying Rea Yaxley, an accountant.
She gave up work to be a full time mother to Trish, Christopher and Jane but remained busy in her work for St Giles Women’s Institute along with her passion for golf and bridge playing.
Mrs Smart, who has been a resident at Radbrook for four years, was joined by close family and friends at a celebratory party at the nursing home.
Although renowned for her fabulous cakes in days gone by, her birthday cake was made by Radbrook’s chefs on this occasion. The 100-year-old believes her longevity is the result of a busy and active life along with a glass of port and small amounts of chocolate each day.
Social life coordinator at Radbrook Nursing Home Margaret Kozyra said: “Mary still participates in our social activities and is a real ‘live wire’. We all wished her many happy returns on her special day.”
