Shropshire residents could have more say over strip club plans
Friday 16th July 2010, 12:02PM BST.
Shropshire residents could soon have a greater say over the location and number of the county’s lap dancing and strip clubs. Shropshire Council will next week be asked to adopt new regulations.
The laws will allow the council to regulate “sexual entertainment venues”.
It will mean that local people can voice their opinions on each application – giving them a greater say in regulating the venues.
The new laws come under the Policing and Crime Act, introduced in April. It will mean premises in the county which offer lap dancing, pole dancing, table dancing, strip shows and peep shows, will need to apply for a sexual entertainment venue licence. The council, as licensing authority, will then decide whether to grant or refuse such bids.
The new legislation also allows local authorities to refuse an application for a licence on potentially wider grounds than is currently permitted under the 2003 Licensing Act.
Mike Owen, Shropshire Council cabinet member responsible for licensing, said: “If councillors agree to adopt these new provisions, local people could have a greater say over where, and how many, lap dancing clubs and similar sexual entertainment venues operate in their area.”
Councillors will also be asked to agree a draft Sexual Entertainment Venue policy.
