Shropshire’s cheapest fuel?
Wednesday 14th July 2010, 10:41AM BST.
A Shropshire superstore could spark a price war in the county after slashing its fuel prices today.
Stans in St Martins has lowered its unleaded fuel prices to 111.9p.
Owners of the family-run superstore and service station believe the price is the lowest in Britain.
The new prices, 111.9p for unleaded petrol and 115.9p for diesel were announced when the supermarket unlocked its pumps this morning.
The price for unleaded is 6p a litre cheaper than the average cost of petrol across the whole of Britain and 18p a litre cheaper than the most expensive petrol in the country.
Andy Faulks, from Stans, took the decision to lower the prices yesterday.
He said: “We are the lowest price for unleaded on the official comparison website www.petrolprices.com.”
The national website has prices for 11,000 petrol stations across the whole of Britain. This morning the site showed that the next cheapest unleaded petrol was 112.9p.
Mr Faulks said: “Some of the multiple supermarkets in Shrewsbury have their unleaded selling at 112.9p.”
Stans is known for its value for money fuel and its offers have led to long queues at its petrol pumps. And Stans is trying to look at other ways to encourage people to shop at its store by offering motorists a chance of money-off vouchers to spend there, if they spend a certain amount on fuel.
