Letter: Dear J. Askew of Newport, regarding your letter in the Shropshire Star, under the heading: “More then enough is spent on this area.” I, as the local borough councillor, would like to point out some facts to you and to the readers of the Shropshire Star. (Read the original letter here)

Firstly, some history. In 2007, the two Malinslee primary schools were merged and rebuilt on the site of the then childrens’ play area.

The council promised it would replace the play area once the new school was built. The children of Malinslee are still waiting, which is why the petition was drawn up. Residents are not “begging for more”, but for what is rightfully theirs.

As for the comment “Malinslee is the highest financially supported estate in the borough”, may I respectfully point out that, for the last three years, Malinslee has had no new leisure facilities at all.

J Askew, you live in Newport, the most prosperous part of our borough. And, in the last three years, since the Conservative administration took control, your town has had over £1.5m of spending planned.

I am not bitter, but perhaps voters in central and south Telford should ask why all this is being spent in Newport, while Malinslee children have to campaign for a play area which was promised them.

Cllr Kuldip Sahota

Obviously councillor Sahota believes the fable (as taught by Wrekin Labour Group) that all rural areas are filled with rich people, that Newport, Wellington and the surrounding villages are populated by families who own three 4×4 cars each and who all have at least one luxury swimming pool.

The truth is that rural poverty is a very real concern. Well, a real concern everywhere but in the Wrekin Labour Group, which seem to be set in aspic, a 1930s museum piece “Toffs v the poor” in which the world is made up of honest miners and factory workers v the evil boss class aided and abetted by the rich landed gentry and their supine yeomen.

In reality, parts of Newport and Wellington and the villages in the Borough are very poor. People on low incomes there suffer just as much as someone on a low income in -for example- Malinslee. Worse, as there often are no buses to enable them to access the cheap supermarkets that the urban poor have reasonably ready access to.

It’s not the fault of the rural poor and the poor of Newport and Wellington that they were, from 1973/74 onwards the forgotten people of the area, with little or no money spent on their services, with sports and community facilities closed down whilst urban Telford got all the cream. That fault rests on the shoulders of the members of Wrekin Labour Group who, through the decades, ignored the needs of the rural poor. Shame on them all!

The balance is being redressed a little. As it should be. The poor of the rural parts of the borough have suffered inequality for long enough without councillor Sahota calling for this blatant inequality (institutionalised when his party was in power!) to be re-introduced. Enough is enough!

when in the face of economic crisis the old Labour mantra by public expenditure and nationalisation of failed business shall always doom this country’s wealth and prosperity. Labours vain expenditure defines the socialist mamon, their abuse of expenses (A right fought for by the working classes) a disgraceful betrayal to all working folk. That Wrekins labour group would want to campaign of all thing for a park when malinslee has the towns park on its doorstep is the defining failure of Labour. Labours ignorance of paragraph 22 of the Beverage Report ” the insured person should not feel that income for idleness, however caused can come from a bottomless purse” was intended for, and support by, the working majority. Only new Labour supports our ill-begotten benefit culture sinking our country welfare to that of Spain or Greece’s. Instead of demonstrating leadership and cohesive support of necessary cut backs to payrole their deficit allowing a prudent fiscal policy to fund our ever growing social, economic and housing needs they seek to create a fallacious class war between impoverished regions of our borough.
All Wrekins Labour Group needs is swings roundabouts and slides for malinslee. What nonsense I despair.

Sorry – no play area for you lot…the Council are too busy lining their own pockets with fat expense accounts and wage rises to worry about you.
