Bid for new weight limit to stop lorries in Audlem
Monday 12th July 2010, 11:59PM BST.
Residents will lobby highways chiefs for tough new weight limits to stop lorries trundling through a village near Market Drayton, it emerged today.
The people who live in Audlem are being asked to take part in a new poll which is designed to see if they agree with weight limits being imposed on the A525 and A529 roads which pass through the village.
Organisers hope that if enough people call for reduced weight limits, road chiefs at Cheshire East Council will act and make sure they come into force.
It comes after the A525 road was removed from the primary routes network by highways bosses earlier this year following years of campaigning by villagers.
That decision meant the road came off the list of routes used by long-distance HGVs, causing lorry drivers to find alternative routes instead of driving through the village.
To help enforce this, weight limits are being considered for some or all of Audlem’s bridges.
Bob Cartwright, editor of the Audlem Online website which is hosting the poll, said: “Weight limits are being considered for some or all of Audlem’s bridges.
“These weight limits will not affect farm vehicles and will still allow access for local deliveries but are aimed purely at the long-distance trucks.
“People’s response will be an important aspect of any application to the highways authorities for the imposition of weight limits,” he continued.
He added: “It was launched on Friday.
“So far 42 people have voted since and it’s 90 per cent in favour of weight limits and 10 per cent against.”
