Opening date for Oswestry’s town green revealed

Oswestry’s new £170,000 town green will be opened to the public on July 23, council chiefs said today.

Contractors have been working on the site off Gobowen Road for months to transform what was a derelict five-acre piece of former railway land into Oswestry’s latest attraction.

Shaun Burkey, Shropshire Council’s community and conservation officer, said the site would be available for the public’s use on July 23 although its unique, turf-covered labyrinth may initially be out of bounds.

He said: “We have had to re-lay the turf on the labyrinth because of the warm weather. The turf which was laid has died so it needed more work.

“What the contractors don’t want to do is re-lay the turf and allow people on to it when it is not quite ready.

“Hopefully we will get some wet weather which will let the turf bed in properly. Once that happens we can have the whole site open.

“We will be having a bit of an official opening on July 23. We chose that date because that is when the school summer holidays start.

“It also gives us a few more weeks to allow the site to green up a bit more so it will be looking good once the fences finally come down.”

The labyrinth is a key feature of the site and will be one of the largest in the world.  The town green also has various play facilities for children and formal and informal nature and leisure areas.

The site was initially going to house Oswestry’s £30 million health village.

Health bosses had to change their plans after campaigners won a battle to have the derelict land registered as a town green.

The health village is now being developed at former railway sheds nearby.
