Pupils taken to hospital after eating seeds

Pupils were taken to hospital after eating seeds from a bush outside the gates of their Shropshire school. The incident happened outside West Felton Primary School.

Staff called the parents of 10 children yesterday after they admitted to picking and eating Laburnum – a poisonous pod which is often mistaken for a pea pod.

The school which has children aged between six and 11 said the youngsters had found the seeds on a bush outside the premises.

Headteacher Nicola Maddocks said the children had eaten sugar snap peas for snack the day before and got confused.

Mrs Maddocks said nothing like this had happened before and that it had happened off school property and before school hours.

As soon as they found out they phoned NHS Direct and called the parents.

“The parents took them to A&E as a precaution,” she said.”We always take precautionary measures. We won’t take the chance.

“I’d like to assure parents that the health and safety of the children in our care is of the utmost importance to us, and this is why we took this action yesterday.”

Ms Sam Bray, chairwoman of the school governors, had taken her child to the hospital as a precaution.

She said: “The school rang for medical advice but the children weren’t showing any symptoms.

“A&E staff were very, very good and very quick. They were very reassuring as some of the children didn’t understand why they were there.”

All the children were checked over and discharged on the same day.

A letter has now been sent home to every parent.

All parts of the Laburnum are said to be poisonous and potentially fatal if eaten in excess.
