Oswestry councillors oppose on-street parking charges

He said the strategy would be subject to public consultation and he wanted a Shropshire Council officer to come to the town council to explain the plans.

Mr Bennett said it was likely the town council would put together “an informed and robust response”.

Town Mayor Elaine Channon said she was concerned about the cost of potential vandalism should meters be installed.

Councillor Gareth Jones said fellow councillors in Ellesmere were “up in arms” about the county-wide proposals.

He said: “This will affect the town of Oswestry.”

Councillors agreed to ask Shropshire Council to send a representative to a town council meeting to outline the plans. They also agreed to give an interim response saying they opposed the principles of the strategy.

Oswestry Chamber of Trade chairman Yossi Gliksman said the move could be a “disaster” for the town.
