Immigration officers and police today raided a Telford factory for suspected illegal workers.
Up to 20 officers from the UK Border Agency and Telford police swooped on W Corbett & Co (Galvanising) Ltd on Halesfield 1 at 11.20am.
About 40 stunned workers were told to stop work and ordered to meet in the canteen for immigration officers to check whether they had legal documents to work in the country.
Six Indian nationals were being questioned by officers this afternoon at the site. Two other workers fled.
Mark Statham, W Corbett & Co managing director, said about 40 workers were on site at the time of the investigation and they had fully co-operated with the officers.
He ordered office staff to download staff lists and payroll information to help the investigation.
Mr Statham said: “We support the authorities in their drive. We understand their reasons why.
“When we are employing we are not interested in the nationality but the legality and whether they can do the job safely.”
British workers and staff who proved they had legal documents after checks were made with the UK Border Agency were able to return to work immediately.
