Call for 10pc of Lake Vyrnwy sale to go back to community
Thursday 8th July 2010, 1:34PM BST.
Calls were today made for 10 per cent of the sale price of the Vyrnwy Estate in north Powys to be ploughed back into the local community to compensate for a “lack of investment” in recent years by owners Severn Trent Water.
Powys County Councillor Simon Baynes called on fellow councillors yesterday to back his move to help residents on the 23,000 acre estate whose lives could be affected by the sale.
Severn Trent announced this week it planned to sell the estate, excluding the reservoir, on a 125-year lease at an asking price of around £11 million.
Councillor Baynes said: “There is considerable concern among local residents over what will happen to them, particularly those with short-term tenancies.” And he added Severn Trent had been “dismal landlords”.
Severn Trent spokeswoman Gill Dickinson said: “Severn Trent runs all its estates sustainably and responsibly, but our core expertise is in providing excellent water and waste water services for our customers, rather than managing upland estates.
“Other organisations are better-placed to bring expertise and investment to Vyrnwy, and a responsible transfer process will bring long-term benefits for all those living, working on and visiting the estate.”

Why should a land-owner give 10% to the local community when they sell the land? When I sell Polly Towers I shall keep the millions to myself, perhaps Cllr Baynes wants to lead by example and sell his country pile and give 10% to everybody else, after all talk is cheap……..
