A 22-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a group of men as she walked through a Shrewsbury park in the early hours, police said today.

The victim was walking in Castle Walk, off Underdale Road in Shrewsbury, when she was forced to the ground by three men, who then attacked her, detectives were told.

The woman was left “extremely distressed but not seriously hurt” by the incident which happened between 2am and 2.45am today, police said.

Officers cordoned off the scene today as they carried out inquiries.

Detective Inspector Mick Homden said: “She reported she was walking on the Castle Walk off Underdale Road when grabbed by three men who carried out an assault. The men then left the area.

“We are appealing for any information which might assist our inquiries. We particularly want to hear from anyone who may have seen three men in the area at the relevant time. We are also appealing for witnesses who may have seen the victim making her way from the Dana direction along the Castle Walk towards Underdale where the incident happened. She was wearing white trousers and the time in question is between 2am and 2.45am.”

He added that officers were also trying to establish the victim’s exact route following a night out in Shrewsbury. It is believed she walked across the Castle Walk footbridge over the River Severn towards Underdale.

“Contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 3333000 as a matter of urgency if you have any information which might help the investigation,” Mr Homden said.

Castle Walk leads through Meadow Park, which contains a play area. This morning the entire park was closed off.
