Police crack down on Oswestry ‘boy racers’
Tuesday 6th July 2010, 9:54AM BST.
Oswestry police officers are enjoying success in the battle to crack down on the town’s notorious “boy racers”, it was claimed today.
Residents living near the town’s Central Car Park have praised police action against drivers who were making their lives a misery in the evenings.
Police said today reports of noise and anti-social driving at Central Car Park have reduced significantly since the clampdown. And they promised they would take “robust” action to ensure problems did not return.
Public concern made the problem a priority for the Oswestry Town West local policing team. Officers gained permission from Shropshire Council to close the car park between 8pm and 6am every night.
Police spokeswoman Maria Wilkinson said: “Regular patrols are carried out during ‘hotspot’ times and a number of Section 59 notices have already been issued to those caught driving in an anti-social manner.
“Repeat offenders could find themselves with a fixed penalty notice or even a summons to appear in court.
“Residents have praised the police response, with one even writing to Inspector Jim Stafford, in charge of policing for Oswestry, to express their satisfaction.”
Since the beginning of June, two young male car drivers have been issued with Section 59 warning notices.
