Man hit by car on A458 near Shrewsbury
Monday 5th July 2010, 12:07PM BST.
A man was seriously ill in hospital today after he is believed to have fallen from the bonnet of a moving car on a road between Shropshire and Mid Wales.
The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene after the incident, which happened on the A458 between Shrewsbury and Welshpool in the early hours of yesterday, police said.
Police said they were called to Dinky’s Dinah at Ford following reports a car had driven away from the roadside cafe with a man holding onto its bonnet at about 12.55am.
Officers and an ambulance crew were called to the scene and a man was found at the roadside with serious head injuries. Police said it was believed the man had fallen off the car.
He was initially taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but has since been transferred to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke-on-Trent, where his condition was today described as “critical but stable”.
Trace
Police said inquiries were carried out to try to trace the vehicle involved and its occupants, and a man in his 20s was arr-ested in the Cannock area shortly before midday yesterday. He has been interviewed and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
A gold Peugeot 306 car was also recovered for forensic examination.
Detective Inspector Mick Homden, who is leading the investigation, said: “It has been reported the injured man had been holding on to the bonnet of the car as it was driven away from Dinky’s and then fell off a short distance down the road. We have already spoken to a number of witnesses but believe there may have been other people who saw both the circumstances leading up to the incident or the incident itself.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact CID at Shrewsbury Police Station on 0300 333 3000.”
