Vandals rip up plants in showpiece park garden
Friday 2nd July 2010, 11:09AM BST.
Vandals have caused widespread damage in Shrewsbury Quarry’s showpiece Dingle, ripping up plants worth hundreds of pounds.
It is the second attack in less than a fortnight. Police are now investigating.
The attack on the public gardens comes as the “town of flowers” gears up for a visit from judges for the annual Heart of England in Bloom competition.
Councillor Jackie Brennand, who is on the Shrewsbury in Bloom Action Committee, said: “Sadly it’s a reflection of modern times.
“The damage will be repaired but I do think it’s sad whoever caused it can’t find a more creative way of getting rid of excess energy.
“The Dingle has only been planted for about a month and it makes more work for everyone.”
The latest incident happened between 7pm on Wednesday and 6am yesterday, when plants were either snapped off or pulled up resulting in about £230 damage.
Shrewsbury Town Cou-ncil reported two heliotrope plants were broken off, three standard fuchsias pulled up and around 20 other plants ripped out of the ground and scattered around the area.
The damage follows a similar incident which happened overnight on June 19 when begonias and various other plants in the Dingle were ripped up and left scattered.
Richard Ewels, West Mercia Police spokesman, today appealed for information to help trace the culprits.
He said: “This is senseless and deliberate damage to a beautiful spot enjoyed by townspeople and visitors alike. We are continuing investigations into these two incidents of criminal damage and would welcome any information which might assist our inquiries.”
