Teenager in court over Telford woods rape
Friday 2nd July 2010, 3:06PM BST.
A teenager has appeared in court charged with the rape of a woman in secluded woodland in Telford almost a year ago.
Jamie Findlater is from Doddington, Hollinswood, Telford.
He was arrested yesterday morning and charged by West Mercia Police last night after being questioned at Malinsgate police station in Telford.
The 18-year-old was also charged with robbing the woman of £30 in cash on August 11 last year.
Findlater was today remanded in custody during a hearing at Telford Magistrates Court.
The case was adjourned until July 12 when Findlater will appear before a judge at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
The victim, a 25-year-old woman, was walking towards Randlay along a footpath between the A442 Eastern Primary and the railway line when she was pulled into a wooded area and attacked.
Detectives offered a £10,000 reward for the conviction of the “Randlay Rapist” following the assault.
Police also put up wanted posters all over the borough with artist’s impressions of the man they were hunting.
Following yesterday’s arrest, Acting Detective Chief Inspector Steve Tonks, senior investigating officer in the case, said: “This investigation has been ongoing from the moment the offence was reported to us and an enormous amount of work has been done to re-ach the stage where charges have now been brought.
“Although incidents of this nature remain extre-mely rare in Telford & Wre-kin, I’d also like to remind local people that if they do have information about criminality of any sort they can contact West Mercia Police by calling 0300 333 3000, or Crimestoppers an-onymously on 0800 555111.”
