Llanwrtyd Wells crowds greet royal couple
Friday 2nd July 2010, 11:10AM BST.
Hundreds of people lined the streets of a Powys town to welcome the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall during the couple’s week long tour of Wales.
This year, the annual tour has taken in diverse locations, ranging from a squirrel conservation project on Anglesey to Llanwrtyd Wells in Powys, the smallest town in Britain.
Hundreds of children and adults braved the rain to ensure the royal couple got a warm welcome yesterday.
Their day began in Llanwrtyd Wells which beat off competition from across the UK last year to claim the Calor Village of the Year title, despite it actually being a town with fewer than 5,000 residents.
The couple then went on to visit Lampeter, where a harp salesman from Mid Wales was given royal backing by the prince. John Jones is on a mission to turn the only harp maker in Wales into a major force in the unsung industry and he is hoping that Prince Charles will be instrumental in boosting his business.
And yesterday he struck a right royal deal to use wood from one of the prince’s estates for a special edition instrument.
The ecstatic super-salesman dubbed his success “music to my ears” after the prince agreed to help out.
Mr Jones, who represents the tiny 11-man Teifi Harps firm, of Llandysul, in Ceredigion, was among guests due to meet the couple at Jen Jones Welsh Quilt Centre in Lampeter.
