Police warning after Knighton fuel raid
Thursday 1st July 2010, 10:26AM BST.
Thousands of pounds worth of fuel has been stolen in a second raid on a heavy goods vehicle parked at a yard on the Shropshire and Mid Wales border.
Police today warned the rising cost of fuel meant rural areas were being targeted after 300 litres of diesel were siphoned out of the Scania lorry in Knighton.
The theft happened between 7pm on Tuesday and 4am yesterday.
On March 14, 400 litres of diesel were removed from the same vehicle at the same location – the CCF Industrial Yard in Station Road.
Constable Bill Cowan, of Knighton Police, said today: “With the ever-rising cost of fuel, diesel supplies in remote areas are being targeted. I would urge everybody with supplies of diesel to make sure that they are adequately protected.” He said the force could give ad- vice on crime prevention.
Constable Cowan said between March 26 and May 12, 200 litres of heating oil were stolen from the oil tank of the Beguildy Church in Wales Primary School.
“This would amount to one 45-gallon barrel requiring up to four persons to lift or nine five-gallon containers requiring one person to make several journeys to load into a vehicle,” he said.
And it is believed that up to 500 litres were taken in January from properties ac-ross the river near Beguildy in south Shropshire.
Constable Cowan said businesses, farms or anyone with their own fuel stores, should “make security awareness a part of the working day” and ensure staff do not discuss information about loads, routes and drivers on the telephone.
“Criminals will call transport offices and pretend to be a customer to acquire specific information about load movements,” he said.
“This information is then used to steal from you.”
