Woman airlifted after Shrewsbury bridge fall
Wednesday 30th June 2010, 2:19PM BST.
A woman was today airlifted to hospital suffering from serious multiple injuries after she fell from a footbridge in the centre of Shrewsbury.
Police and ambulance services were called about 10.30am after the woman, believed to be in her 20s, fell from the Frankwell Bridge onto land near Smithfield Road.
She was flown by Midlands Air Ambulance to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke-on-Trent at about noon after initially being taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Ambulance service spokesman Suzie Fothergill said the woman suffered head and chest injuries, a suspected broken pelvis and fractures to both legs.
The footbridge leading from Frankwell Car Park to the Riverside Shopping Centre was closed and reopened just before noon when police officers left the scene.
An area of about 15 square metres where the woman is believed to have landed remained cordoned off with police tape.
Richard Ewels, West Mercia police spokesman, said officers were unsure whether the woman fell or jumped from the bridge.
He said: “We attended an incident this morning after being alerted by the ambulance service. We were dealing with a woman, believed to be in her 20s, who had fallen from the Frankwell footbridge and landed near Smithfield Road.”
He said: “The footbridge was closed for a short time and an area has been cordoned off. At this time we cannot say if the woman fell, if she was pushed or if she jumped. The police will continue to investigate the incident.”
