Six quizzed in child sex ring inquiry

Six people who have been arrested in connection with a Shropshire child sex ring involving girls as young as 13 were being quizzed by detectives today.

The five men and a woman were arrested in Telford, West Yorkshire, Berkshire and West Sussex. They were being held at three police stations across West Mercia.

Officers from Telford made the first arrests outside of the county as part of the huge operation yesterday.

All of the suspects were arrested on suspicion of exploitation and human trafficking.

Today Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police, said the five men and a woman remained in police custody at three police stations across West Mercia.

He said they would continue to be questioned throughout the day.

Yesterday’s arrests were part of phase three of the on-going investigation into human trafficking and sexual offences.

Police believe the victims are teenage girls between 13 and 16.

Detectives said the scale of the on-going investigation, which is expected to continue for several months, was demonstrated by the arrests across the UK.

Following yesterday’s arrests, police renewed their appeal for concerned parents or teenagers who believe they may be targeted to come forward.

Leading officers said signs of grooming included a change of behaviour, truanting from school, and new clothes, jewellery and mobile phones.

Anybody who thinks their daughter may be involved should contact Telford police on 0300 333 3000.
