Bates and Harrison stay with Telford Titans
Wednesday 30th June 2010, 9:00PM BST.
Telford Titans coach Dave Fielder believes he has retained two of his side’s “strongest players” after Stuart Bates and Simon Harrison agreed to play for the ENL 1 outfit next season.
Bates and Harrison had been widely expected to join Telford Tigers in the English Premier League after they enjoyed outstanding campaigns last year, but both have instead decided to remain with the Titans.
The decision means Fielder will once again have two of the brightest defensive prospects in the ENL amongst his ranks next season, as he looks to improve on a sixth-placed finish in the standings.
He said: “Stuart was happy to stay with us, as he has got a lot of friends on the team and he wanted to play for fun, so I am well chuffed, as I did not want to lose him.
“He is one of our strongest players and even though he isn’t the biggest on the ice, he is a great defenceman and held it together when I wasn’t around last season.
Brother
“Simon had a good season both up front and in defence. I was surprised that the Tigers did not snap him up to play on their third line, as he always works hard and can play anywhere.”
Fielder has also retained the services of Simon’s younger brother Dan, as well as local Sean Weeks.
He added: “Sean Weeks is always the first on the ice in training and the last off. When I first took over he wasn’t getting a lot of ice time, but we have trained him into one of our best penalty killers.”
And he said the younger Harrison brother could make the step up to playing with Telford Tigers next year: “Tom Watkins has been looking at Dan and if he is short, he could bring him up. You can play under-21 players up or down as many times as you want.
“He is definitely a good prospect.”
