Telford to lose £2m in children and young people grants
Tuesday 29th June 2010, 3:15PM BST.
Almost £2 million in government grants are to be axed from budgets set aside to help children and young people in Telford.
Angela McClements, a Labour councillor at Telford & Wrekin Council, claimed the cuts would hit programmes designed to slash teenage pregnancy rates as well as those for out-of-school youth activity.
Councillor Stephen Burrell, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Telford & Wrekin Council has made savings of £2.8 million over the last three years with no cutbacks to frontline services for children and young people.
“We are currently reviewing our budgets and will be doing all that we can to protect key services.
“We have a proven record of delivering more with less,” he said.

Don’t you worry Ms. McClements, you don’t need £2M in taxpayers’ money to slash teenage pregnancy rates; they will flatline when we stop throwing cash and flats at young teenage girls.
By interfering in teenagers’ private lives and taking the need to make decisions away from them, the state has created the situation of soaring pregnancy rates. By withdrawing from meddling in peoples’ lives and forcing them to be responsible for their actions, (and not being paid wads of cash for having babies), they’ll soon take the new austerity option of not getting pregnant unless they’re fully prepared to handle the consequences in the first place.
By all means have children if you want, teenagers, but don’t expect me to pay for them – I have my own financial hurdles to jump and subsidising your lifestyles has become a burden upon mine.
