Long detour for drivers after Dyfi Bridge accident
Tuesday 29th June 2010, 11:21AM BST.
Lorry drivers are being forced to take a 20-mile detour to get through a Mid Wales town after part of a key road bridge was knocked down.
The Dyfi Bridge, near Machynlleth, was hit by a lorry on Friday, causing the bridge to be closed for more than eight hours.
It later reopened, but only to light vehicles, leaving lorry drivers facing a 20-mile detour to get around the town.
The diversion takes drivers from Cross Foxes on the A470 outside Dolgellau, Gwynedd and on the A489 at Cemmaes Road and Mallwyd, Powys.
John Evans, Powys County Council spokesman, said concrete safety barriers had been put on the bridge and traffic lights were in operation.
He said: “We were informed that something had hit the bridge and we were called in to close it and put in diversions for traffic.
“Concrete barrier protectors were brought in and were put in place and three-way traffic signals will be in operation until the damage is fully assessed and repaired.
“However, until the full repairs take place, heavy goods vehicles will have to use the diversion and only cars and other light vehicles will be permitted to cross.”
The bridge goes over the River Dyfi and has been the centre of controversy for a number of years, with locals and councillors calling on the bridge to be strengthend.

I don’t think “calling on the bridge” will help.
Perhaps calling _for_ the bridge to be _strengthened_ would be better?
