Plan to revive Bishop’s Castle Agricultural Show

Organisers behind a traditional Shropshire agricultural show dating back more than 100 years have not given up hope of resurrecting the event.

Bishop’s Castle Agricultural Show is on hold due to a lack of committee members to pull the event together. It was last held in 2008.

But organisers of the 112-year-old event have continued to meet and say they have the funds in place to run the event in 2011 – if there is enough interest.

The show was always held at the end of July at land near Crowgate. It included horses, livestock, sheep, poultry and a dog show and attracted entries from across the Midlands, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Mid Wales.

Since its demise people in nearby Norbury have set up the Upper Onny Country Show, which will be held for the first time next month.

Dave Marpole, who was the show committee’s chairman until 2009, said: “It’s on hold at the moment as we are waiting for input and local interest to put it back together.

“With agriculture changing there are fewer people working on the land and fewer farmers with time to put into it.

“But we have been looking at bringing the show back – the funds are in place but we need committee members to run it and pull the event together.”

He added: “It would be too late to look at doing a show this year but we would like to run a show in 2011 if possible. In the last few years we had evolved with the times to meet the demands of a more modern show, and we had brought in trade stands and a rural craft marquee to increase the appeal of the show.”

Anyone interested in getting involved is urged to contact committee chairman Simon Bedell on (01588) 638361.
