Jazz star Kenny Ball taken ill at Shrewsbury concert
Monday 28th June 2010, 10:36AM BST.
Jazz musician Kenny Ball had to cut short a performance at a Shrewsbury hotel after he was struck down by illness.
Mr Ball was taken to hospital with breathing difficulties, midway through his performance on Saturday night at the Lion Hotel on Wyle Cop.
But after spending less than an hour at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Mr Ball, 80, discharged himself, saying he was feeling fine.
The concert continued in his absence with Mr Ball’s band the Jazzmen keeping the audience entertained.
Jazzmen trombone player John Bennett said he expected Mr Ball to be back on stage for a performance in Exeter tonight.
He said: “He was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution but he was OK.
“He was just having breathing problems and he couldn’t keep up, so he left at the interval. He was only at the hospital about an hour and he was back to his old self by the time he left.”
Mr Ball was performing in the hotel’s first jazz weekend when he was taken ill at the interval, retiring initially to his room.
