Application over Shrewsbury supermarket hours
Monday 28th June 2010, 11:12AM BST.
Bosses behind a development which could create up to 100 jobs in the heart of Shrewsbury have now applied to increase the hours that a supermarket being built at the site can open.
Morris Property submitted plans to transform Barker Street last year along with partners including Claremont Baptist Church and it was given the go ahead in December.
The four-storey development will include a supermarket and pharmacy, a new home for the Riverside Medical Practice on the ground, first and second floors, offices o0n the third floor and a replacement two-storey church following demolition of the church and buildings.
But bosses have now applied to Shropshire Council to vary a condition to allow the store to open between 7am and 11pm, from Monday to Sunday.
Under the planning permission originally granted they were restricted to opening for retail purposes between 7am and 10pm Monday to Friday, from 8am until 9pm on Saturday and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday in order to “maintain the amenities of the area”.
A statement by the applicants says: “The local authority, by virtue of granting a recent planning permission to include a retail unit, has accepted and acknowledged that the retail unit would provide a valuable contribution to both visitors and residents within the town centre which will help to enhance the vitality and viability of the town centre.
“To extend the approved hours in this location will offer a service that is commonly associated with this type of location and complement other businesses and uses with similar opening hours in its vicinity.”
