Hunt for Telford crash motorist
Monday 28th June 2010, 4:02PM BST.
Police are hunting a motorist who fled after his car ended up on its roof when it smashed into a wall in Telford.
The driver of the Seat Leon ran off from the scene, leaving the vehicle blocking Harris Terrace in The Rock area of the town.
A police helicopter was drafted in yesterday to help in the search for the man, who fled towards Newdale about 3.40pm.
Residents today said it was lucky no-one was injured or killed in the crash, which happened in the Rock Road area.
Debbie Ironmonger, whose family was in the front room watching television, was in the kitchen when the car struck.
She said: “I heard the skid of tyres and a massive bang. I looked out of the window and the car was upside down. I just rang the police.
“Some kids said the car clipped the crossing railings and flipped. It ended up right opposite us on its roof.”
She said: “Some of the neighbours said a bloke got out and ran up the hill.”
Mrs Ironmonger said: “My dad said he heard a big bang and saw some smoke. I was fully expecting to see bodies.”
Firefighters from Wellington and Telford Fire Stations were also called to the scene.
Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “We had a call at 3.35pm. The road was blocked. A black Seat Leon had ended up on its roof.
“An unknown man was seen to get out of the vehicle and run off afterwards. The area was searched for the man without success.
“Inquiries are ongoing to try and identify this man and speak to the registered keeper of the said vehicle.”
