Strong demand for Shropshire County Show tickets

Friday 25th June 2010, 1:51PM BST.

More than 8,000 tickets for the first Shropshire County Show have been sold in advance of the event this weekend, organisers today said.

Final preparations were this afternoon being made for this weekend’s show and organisers said they were hoping to attract up to 30,000 visitors to the two-day event.

As traders and competitors continued to arrive at the showground in Berwick Road, Shrewsbury, ahead of the show tomorrow and Sunday, Roy Dodd, chairman elect for the Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society, said: “Ticket sales are going really well.

“We’ve stopped the sale of tickets on the website now because there isn’t time to post them out but we are still taking orders on the telephone for people to collect on the gate.

“The bulk of the people do pay at the gate. About 8,000 to 9,000 pre-show tickets have been sold in advance.

“We’re hoping to get between 20,000 and 30,000 people over the weekend.”

The show replaces the West Mid Show which ran for 120 years but ceased to exist after it was hit by financial problems last year.

Mr Dodd said a lot of work was going on today to prepare for the weekend.

He said: “Today is a very busy day with all the stands and machinery and the animals starting to arrive. There’s definitely a feel good factor at the moment.”

Mary Hopkins, general manager at the show, said a wealth of entertainment was planned with Countryfile presenters filming for the BBC show at the event.

She said: “We have planned an action-packed two days with entertainment for all of the family to enjoy.

“There will be exciting entertainment in the main ring and in the side rings.”
