Telford teenager, 18, had sex with girl, 12

A Shropshire teenager has been spared an immediate prison sentence after having consensual sex with a girl under the age of 13.
Jack Devey, 18, of Wildwood, Telford, appeared in Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday. He previously admitted the rape of a girl under 13 between May 1, 2009 and June 31, 2009.
He was sentenced to 52 weeks in a young offenders’ institution, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 250 hours unpaid work.
He was also made the subject of an electronically tagged curfew.
Mr Mark Linkins, prosecuting, said the offence took place after Devey had been drinking with friends and the girl and her friends joined the group at a house.
The court heard the girl said she told Devey that she was only 12 years old but said he may not have heard her because he was too drunk.
Mr Linkins said: “The prosecution do not seek to say that the act was anything other than consensual.”
