Driver admits causing death of Telford girl, 14

A taxi driver has admitted causing the death of a 14-year-old Telford schoolgirl after his vehicle was involved in a motorway collision with a lorry.

Kandjit Singh, 23, yesterday pleaded guilty to causing the death of Jasmeet Kaur by driving dangerously when he appeared at Reading Crown Court in Berkshire.

Singh had been at the wheel of the car on the M4 when it collided with a lorry in East Berkshire on August 2 last year.

Schoolgirl Jasmeet, of Glendinning Way in Madeley, died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics.

Singh, also of Glendinning Way, spoke only to confirm his identity and enter a guilty plea to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving during his court appearance.

The case was adjourned until September 3 for sentencing.

Jasmeet’s family issued a moving tribute after her death, describing the 14-year-old as a “normal, happy teenager”.

A statement said: “The parents of Jasmeet would like to express their deep appreciation to the many people who have offered their heartfelt wishes, support and messages of condolence.

“Jasmeet was the youngest of our children and a normal happy teenager enjoying life.

“In particular she had a keen interest in music and was taking extra lessons out of school for the clarinet.”

Tributes also poured in after friends set up a page on internet social networking site Facebook, called In Memory of our Dear Jasmeet.

Her funeral was attended by hundreds of friends and family.
