Cost of immigration booklet revealed

A booklet given to immigrant workers to help them settle into life in Shropshire cost almost £3,000 to produce, new figures show. The Welcome to Shropshire pack was put together last September.
The Shropshire Partnership’s equalities for- um hopes it will help people from different backgrounds learn about the area they were coming to.
It is written in English, Polish and Russian. Shropshire Council diversity officer Kal Parkash revealed the cost this week.
He said: “The Welcome to Shropshire pack cost £2,889 to design and print. Only a short test run of less than 100 copies was originally printed, and teams within the council were encouraged to direct people to the electronic version on the website, and print them as and when needed to save costs.”
Forum members listened to experiences, views and feedback before producing the booklet, distributed by council staff. Copies were also available at libraries, customer service points and other community venues.
Partners such as the police, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, the primary care trust, voluntary and community groups, and colleges have also helped get the booklet to the people who need it most.
In September Councillor Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council cabinet member for community working, said it was “important” that people unfamiliar with Shropshire were welcomed to the county.
He said the booklet was an “effective way” of giving them the information they need to get started.

A piffling amount realy, however I hope under the new coalition this type if thing will be discouraged, after all if they cant speak the language they shouldnt come to the uk looking to become a resident, looking for work is a little different if from the EU however .

Should be an “effective way” of helping Brummie immigrants to learn about the area they are coming to. Does it include an elocution programme?

I have met many Welshmen that have trouble communicating in England and do not understand or respect our culture. I’m hoping that the booklet also explains how England are better at rugby than Wales.

For a 40-page plus booklet any good designer would charge a minimum of £2000 for design let-alone writing, photography and printing costs so it was pretty good value-wise.
It’s a very small amount for such a large county. If we don’t welcome new residents we cannot expect them to integrate nor to know or appreciate our beautiful county which is famed for it’s friendly people.
