Letter: Come on, England, sing the anthem
Wednesday 23rd June 2010, 6:00AM BST.
Letter: I enjoy listening to the national anthems in the World Cup and how enthusiastically they are sung with pride.
I have noticed, however, that Wayne Rooney never sings our anthem. Could it be that he is anti-monarchy of the country he is representing? Perhaps he is too tense with pent up emotion and would break down completely if he began singing.
Then again I may be being too harsh on the young man and he just does not know the words.
For whatever reason he is hardly in a position to comment on our staunch patriotic supporters who have travelled thousands of miles and spent hundreds of pounds to see him and others perform so pathetically.

Wayne Rooney is a anti-monarchy disgrace. He clearly should be sacked from his position and a lottery should then take place amongst the staunch patriotic supporters, the winner of which should then take his place and show him how to do the job properly….I assume that they could easily fill his boots and run around for 90 minutes and generally show him how much better they are than him. Wayne Rooney on the other hand would be left to sit around drinking beer in the sun, blowing on a vuvuzela and bemoaning England’s performance – that’d show him.

To accuse Mr Rooney of being anti Monarchy because he does not sing the anthem of the country he is representing rather misses the point; God save the Queen is the British National anthem, Mr Rooney, perhaps it should be understood is not a member of the British team but is playing for England.
Had Scotland or Wales got to the finals perhaps it would have been interesting to see all three teams singing the same national anthem, but of course that would not have happened as the Welsh sing Land of our Father and the Scots have used the unofficial Flower of Scotland since the 1990s. Nationalism it seems is a rather limited affair ok for parts of Great Britain but not for England.

As the England team have now been unceremoniously ousted from the competition this comment may be somewhat belated. I have to agree with Mr Adams. The English – and as such their sports representatives – do not have an anthem they can claim as their own. God save the Queen (an awful tune and song in my opinion) is the British not the English national anthem. In many ways I would like to be rid of such songs, but, if only for the purposes of sporting pride, they may have a role to play. As for Mr Rooney and his colleagues a reluctance to sing is the mildest criticism directed their way. But as John Terry pointed out after the defeat by a fine German side the England team did have a nice hotel. It all comes down to priorities I suppose.
