Lembit Opik: “Hello Glastonbury!”
Tuesday 22nd June 2010, 9:58AM BST.
Former Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik has confirmed today that he will be performing at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.
The 45-year-old said he had been booked to perform at the festival’s Leftfield comedy event on Friday.
The Liberal Democrat lost his seat in the House of Commons after 13 years.
He was one of the shock casualties of election night after his 7,000-strong majority was overturned by Conservative Glyn Davies.
But this weekend he will be performing a 45-minute comedy act and a question and answer session at the largest open-air music and performing arts festival in the world.
He said: “I’m a bit nervous about it all but looking forward to it at the same time.
“It’s a great honour to have been asked to perform at such a major festival and it’s also nice to know that people still think I’m worth listening too.”
Mr Opik said life as a stand-up comedian was going well.
“Doing Have I Got News For You a few months ago and performing at London’s Backstage Comedy Club has whetted my appetite and I have done more than 800 after-dinner speeches in 20 years, which is a form of stand-up,” he said.
“My act on Friday will be taking a humorous look at the election and I will be giving my prediction for Britain.”
