Shrewsbury Flax Mill plan needs £17m of public cash
Monday 21st June 2010, 12:06PM BST.
Up to £17 million of public funding needs to be found to redevelop Shrewsbury’s Flax Mill, it emerged today.
Fresh details of the scheme, expected to cost £30 million overall, were released last week.
Plans for the Ditherington Flax Mill project are expected to be lodged next month, with the application expected to be for the first phase of the scheme for the mill, also known as the Maltings, and outline proposals for the overall project.
Today Gareth Proffitt, a spokesman for Shropshire Council, said work on the details was continuing, but added a lot of public funding would be needed for the development.
He said: “Between £9 million and £17 million of public funding will need to be found, and various possible sources of funding are being explored, including Heritage Lottery Funding, the Homes and Communities Agency and other sources of funding.”

Now would’nt that be a waste of money, knock the horrable thing down and put the land to better use.
There are too many “historical” relics in shrewsbury as it is, this would not be missed except that it would be one eyesore less.

Given Ditherington’s reputation it will end up as a crack house long before anyone with half a mind shows any cultural interest. Or some idiot will burn it to the ground for a bung. Seems to par for the course on that side of town

I agree. Imagine if the Ironbridge had been demolished back in the day when the area was nothing more than an ancient industrial wasteland.
