Man killed in four-car rush-hour crash

One man and died and two other people were injured in a four-vehicle smash on a mid Wales road. The man, believed to be elderly, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash yesterday.
The collision happened on the A495 Llansantffraid to Meifod road during the rush-hour.
Another casualty was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, but their condition is unknown. A further patient was treated at the scene.
Firefighters were at the scene for almost six hours.
Chris Jones, a spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service, said they were called at 4.19pm yesterday.
He said the Wales Air Ambulance, based in Welshpool, was dispatched to the scene as well as a land ambulance and a doctor from the British Association For Immediate Care (Basics).
Mr Jones said they took a patient to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but had no details of their injuries.
He added another patient, who he believed was an elderly man, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Basics doctor.
Firefighters were also at the scene for about six hours. They battled to release one of the patients from the wreckage and were then tasked with making the vehicles safe.
A spokesman for the Mid and West Wales Fire Service said crews were called at 4.23pm.
She said: “The fire service was involved in making the vehicles safe and releasing one casualty from the vehicle using hydraulic cutting equipment.”
Firefighters from Llanfyllin and Llanfair Caereinion attended and finally left shortly after 10.15pm.
A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said they would be releasing a statement on the accident later today.
